Diabetes and smoking
Diabetes increases the risk of coronary heart disease fourfold in women. Smoking
increases the risk of coronary heart disease fourfold in women. Together, the
effect may be additive, yielding a possible eightfold increase in coronary heart
disease. Women with diabetes who smoke are strongly encouraged to stop smoking.
For most women, a combination of group support and pharmacologic therapy is most
effective. Please discuss smoking cessation with your primary care provider.
